24 people, hundreds of future births. Another “Safe Mom” is behind us

Izabela Cywa, coordinator of the “Safe Mom” project, summarizes its sixth edition.

Dear Donors of the “Safe Mom” project,
saving newborns and their mothers from death during childbirth in the Central African Republic!

In December, the sixth edition of the “Safe Mom” project took place. Thanks to your commitment, we were able to train 24 medical professionals. The majority of participants were matrons – traditional “village midwives” who assist with home births. In addition, several midwives and two obstetricians working in healthcare centers in the Central African Republic took part in the training.

Most of the participants came from the Padre Pio mission health center in Bimbo. Thanks to your support, we also provided the center with specialized medical equipment, including a CTG machine and a medical scale. We additionally equipped the trainees with basic gynecological and obstetric tools, as well as medical and paramedical supplies—such as fetal stethoscopes and sterile umbilical cord clamps, essential for safe deliveries. We also distributed numerous materials useful during childbirth.

The training was conducted by three volunteers from Poland: a midwife, a neonatologist, and a gynecologist. The matrons and midwives gained knowledge in pregnancy care, childbirth, and the postpartum period, as well as in caring for premature babies and newborns. The sessions were very intensive. On the final day, the participants assisted in a vertical birth, which they had previously practiced many times using training mannequins we had donated to the center. The delivery proceeded without complications, and both mother and baby are doing very well.

We would not have been able to carry out these trainings or bring hope to thousands of mothers and their children in the Central African Republic without your help, dear missionary donors. We know that many of you prayed for us – for this, we thank you wholeheartedly. In our prayers, we entrust you to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who embraces African mothers in their difficulties and suffering.

A total of 117,650 PLN was allocated to carry out the sixth edition of the “Safe Mom” training program. The seventh edition is planned for 2027. The year 2026 will be dedicated to establishing the first childbirth education school in the Central African Republic, complementing current efforts by providing women with education on newborn care and the postpartum period.
