Thanks to the support of the Dehonian Mission Family, 55 new boreholes have been built in Chad, providing thousands of people with access to clean water and offering hope for a safer daily life.
Access to clean water is one of the greatest challenges faced every day by people living in many regions of Chad. Thanks to the commitment and generosity of the Sacred Heart Mission Family, this need has been addressed in a very tangible way – during the last dry season, 55 new boreholes were constructed in the mission areas.
More than 65% of Chad’s territory is desert. In the places where our missionaries serve – Fathers Edward Ryfa and Jakub Szałek – access to water is particularly difficult. There are no rivers or permanent natural water sources. Local communities rely mainly on seasonal wells, which fill up during the rainy season but often completely dry up during the many months of drought. During this time, both people and animals are forced to use the same water sources, which are often contaminated. Such conditions contribute to the spread of bacteria and parasites, and waterborne diseases pose a serious threat to communities already struggling with poverty and malnutrition.
Our response to this challenge has been the borehole construction program carried out in mission areas in Chad since 2017. Each newly built borehole provides a permanent source of clean water for up to 300 people, improving the living conditions of entire local communities.
During the last dry season, which lasted from November 2025 to May 2026, we were able to complete the drilling of as many as 55 new boreholes. This was possible thanks to the support of our Donors, whose contributions provided the resources needed to achieve this goal. In total, we allocated PLN 825,000 (approximately USD 221,000) for the construction of the wells.
The rainy season is currently underway in Chad. This is a time when drilling new boreholes is not possible. It is also, however, a period of preparation for the next stage of the project. We are gathering strength and resources so that, when the next dry season arrives, we can begin the construction of further wells and reach more people in need.
Each well is much more than just a source of water. It means health, safety, and a chance for a better future for entire families. Through our shared commitment, we can continue to transform the lives of people living in the most difficult conditions. Thank you!
